Dress Code

Bathgate Elementary School adheres to the dress policy of the Capistrano Unified School District.  Students are encouraged to wear clothes that promote positive self esteem and that are appropriate for a school setting, and do not disrupt the learning environment.  Students have the right to make individual choices from a wide range of clothing and grooming styles, but they must not present a health or safety hazard or a distraction, which would interfere with the educational process. Any attire which reflects gang affiliation, intended or unintended, is prohibited.  Clothing that displays inappropriate messages including, but not limited to, alcohol or tobacco products, obscene symbols, signs, slogans or words degrading race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, disability, gender or sexual orientation may not be worn.

Students may not wear any clothing/apparel that is disruptive, including but not limited to:
  • baggy or sagging pants
  • bare midriffs, halter-tops, backless shirts, spaghetti straps (tank tops are acceptable with 2 inch straps)
  • short shorts (skirts/shorts must extend past extended fingertips when arms and hands are placed at sides)
  • makeup
  • tight or revealing clothing or clothing that allows underwear to be exposed.

Hair color must be a natural color.  Foot apparel must be worn at all times and all shoes must cover heels and toes for safety reasons.

Local schools are granted the authority to establish school-based dress and grooming standards which may change as necessary. Principals are to work with teachers, students, and parents in the establishment of any such local standards. These standards were reviewed and approved by committees of students, parents, and staff.
